Amaqhawe (Dance)

A blend of contemporary narrative, contemporary genres and style of dance. For me it was like watching all of Black South Africans protest narratives in one work.

As I walked out my ears peaked at one white lady’s comment who said “I understand their grievence but why are they so angry”

Clearly me and her were not watching the same piece. Why wouldn’t anger be felt when for decades no one has listened. So What better form to make them understand than using art. Perhaps you might listen better with both your ears and eyes.

I  must admit that the soundtrack caught me. Again the soundtrack did what the movement in the work was doing blending traditional and contemporary music together. I caught myself tapping my feet throughout some of the songs wishing I could join these dancers on stage and tell my own narrative but I had to dance at my sit.

Wonderful work to watch
